Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major disease with
significant impact across our nation. Several new developments, therapeutics and treatments have occurred in this field
in the last few years. Although these advances show positive signs of help, lung disease is still a growing epidemic that affects many of us.
COPD is a major health problem in the United States. More than 12
million people have been diagnosed with COPD, and another 12 million
have signs of the disease but have not yet been diagnosed. It is the fourth leading cause of death in America, with 119,000 deaths annually and growing every year. Despite the ease of screening and diagnosis, COPD remains an
underdiagnosed disease, chiefly in its earlier, milder, and more
treatable form. Studies have shown that COPD is underrecognized and, in
many instances, undertreated. According to an analysis of
health-care delivery in communities with more than 200,000 people, 58.9%
of patients received recommended care, with wide variation across
communities.
Lung Centers of America (LCA) is an active community dedicated to the
fighting and treating of lung disease. Our goal is to reach out to the
community and educate all having or knowing of somebody with a pulmonary
disorder. LCA is involved at the clinical level and have listened to people
struggling with the daily signs and symptoms associated with the
disease process. We communicate with institutions, physicians and other
medical groups to generate feedback so we can better inform everybody
seeking help.
